CPI(M) to convene emergency meeting on Thursday

Chennai: Hours after AIADMK released the list of its candidates for the April 13 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, its ally CPI(M) on Wednesday said it was "shocked" at the inclusion of seats meant to be contested by the Left party and an emergency state executive meeting will be held on Thursday to discuss the issue.

CPI(M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan said their and AIADMK election panels met here on Wednesday where they discussed the list of 12 constituencies his party wanted to contest which included some of those which it had won in the 2006 polls besides those with winning prospects.

He said the AIADMK panel told their CPI(M) counterparts that they would discuss the matter with party General Secretary J Jayalalithaa and revert to them.

"But, within the next hour, the AIADMK list was released saying the party will contest 160 seats. This includes six seats we had won in 2006 and others we wanted to contest from. This is shocking," he said in a statement here.

Ramakrishnan said it was "not proper" on AIADMK's part to release its candidates list even as it was involved in talks and it was "not acceptable".

He demanded that AIADMK withdraw its candidates from constituencies that his party had been demanding and said an emergency meeting of the CPI(M) state executive will be held here tomorrow to discuss the situation.

The AIADMK had earlier in the day announced that it will contest from 160 seats.
