DMK supremo to announce candidates' list on March 16


Chennai, Mar 14 : President of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today announced that the party would release the list of candidates for April 13 Assembly elections to Tamil Nadu Assembly on March 16.

A release from party headquarters here said Mr Karunanidhi would release the list of candidates at a press conference to be held at party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam at 1700 hrs.

As the party was running short of time and the nominations open on March 19, the DMK leader was likely to release one full list comprising 120 candidates.

More than 16,000 partymen had applied for tickets and the aspiring candidates were interviewed by a panel, led by Mr Karunanidhi during the past one week.

A number of partymen had presented applications on behalf of Mr Karunanidhi, stating that he should seek election from Tiruvarur in his native district.

If Mr Karunanidhi choses to contest this time, it would be his 12th election. He would also contest for the sixth time for the Chief Ministership.

The octogenarian Chief Minister holds the record for winning all the 11 previous Assembly elections, he had contested. He did not contest the 1980 Assembly elections, when he was the member of Legislative Council.
